In a little over a week our nation will decide who will be the next president of the United States. It goes without saying that this election has raised emotions to a new height. Friends have become enemies; politicians continue to seek the basest of actions while desiring the highest of offices. Add in a pandemic and racial tensions and whoever leads us next will have their work cut out.
Christians need to be careful about getting too wrapped up in politics. I have strong political views, but they are not the most important thing in my life. My faith is. Christians need only be concerned about ONE kingdom, the Kingdom of God. That’s the kingdom that really matters and will be here long after earthly kingdoms vanish.
As we vote and involve ourselves in politics, what should be a Christians responsibility? Well, there are two things that I can think of, one is a responsibility and one is an American right.
First, we have a responsibility to pray.
Pray hard and pray often. Heed the words of Paul to Timothy about dealing with politics. 1 Timothy 2:1–4 (NLT) — 1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.
Think about what Paul is saying here. Pray for our government SO WE CAN LIVE PEACEFUL QUIET LIVES. It’s not our job to get caught up in creating a ruckus over politics. Angry fights, bad feelings, name calling all fly in the face of living a quiet peaceful life. Whatever transition of power may come, pray that it brings peace, not violence. Pray that you and I react peacefully, and don’t become part of the problem
Ask God to help them make decisions that will allow us to share the gospel. It’s our job to try to get the message of hope and salvation to everyone we meet. God wants everyone to be saved. It doesn’t matter what party affiliation they are. It doesn’t matter what race they are. It doesn’t matter what neighborhood they live in. God wants them to know the salvation he offers all who come to him.
Pray on their behalf. Whoever becomes a leader at any level; pray that they make godly decisions, pray that they will allow us to practice our faith without persecution, pray that they will lead our local, state or nation well.
Second, we have a right to vote.
we live in a country that gives us the right and freedom to vote, so vote. But vote your conscience, not a party affiliation. Vote for man or woman who shows good values and common sense. We’ve sent enough idiots to Washington, let’s send some good people now.
